TURINO DI SANO- GIOVANNI DI TURINO
St JOHN THE BAPTIST
ca. 1420
Carved and painted wood, 162 cm high
Montalcino, Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art
The wooden statue of St John the Baptist, conserved at the Museum of Sacred Art in Montalcino, is linked stylistically to the modes of the two stories of the Baptismal Font of St John at Siena.
Since these were executed in a collaboration between Turino and Giovanni, distinguishing what is owed to one or to the other is rather difficult.
As it was realised in their workshop, it is more probable that its paternity can be attributed to Turino, because it is the oldest and has sections of draping that are still reminiscent of 14th-century solutions.
